Google+ Feature: Derek Evens

Changes in the Google+ algorithm makes it harder and harder to trace posts on our profile down to specific dates, so we decided to change the Google+ blogs to a random feature.

That way - nobody can feel that somebody else was featured in a week where they didn't post, and fairness etc etc.

The random feature will be totally random, and random in it's randomness. It will be purely based on photos shared with the #AFRICANature hashtag that caught our eyes.

This week's featured photo is by +Derek Evens - lovely take on a leopard tortoise drinking water from a puddle in the road in the Kruger National Park.

This photo is the copyright of Derek Evens and unauthorised use is prohibited.

Trawling through our 2015 archives on Facebook...

Our theme for this particular week was #whyiloveKenya and we asked our contributing photographers to showcase their best images from the wonderful land of Kenya. There were great photos of elephants in front of Kilimanjaro, and cheetahs in full chase, but this photo of a pride of lions lazily lounging on a log had to be featured.

Facebook Pic of the Week: 18 to 24 May 2015

Our theme for the week of 18 to 24 May on our Facebook Page was #InColdBlood.

It was all about cold-blooded animals (specifically reptiles, amphibians and fish). We asked our community of photographers to show us creative and compelling photos of these animals which are often ignored on platforms such as social media.

We received many great submissions, but this low angle photo of an African Rock Python swallowing an impala whole stole the show a bit. It was taken by Fred von Winckelmann, and you can see more of his work on his WEBSITE.

The theme for this week on our Facebook Page was #LoadsofLeopards - and boy did we receive a great deal of amazing photos of this elusive and beautiful big cat!

This monochrome portrait by Mees Kuiper really caught our attention - the tones, detail and the blotchy bokeh in the background really makes for a captivating portrait. You can see more of his work on his Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/meeskuiperphotography

Facebook Pic of the Week: 10 to 16 November 2014

During this week on our Facebook Page, it was an open theme again - #AnythingGoes

The AFRICANature brand is about high quality imagery. You don't have to be a professional photographer to produce high quality imagery, but you need to know your equipment, know your subject and know how to process your photos properly.

We are very happy with the standard of images being shared with the theme - but that also makes our choice as curators even harder.

This aerial photo of Giraffes in Namibia was a clear standout shot. It was taken by Jay Roode - and you can check out more of her fabulous aerial photography on her website: www.sky-hawk.co.za

Facebook Pic of the Week: 7 to 13 April 2014

With all the attention that the big iconic animals of Africa get on social media every day, we thought it apt to encourage people to post photos of the lesser-noticed species during this week. We chose the theme #AntelopeAntics for our Facebook Page.

We loved seeing all the different species of antelopes and various types of behaviour displayed. There was one photo which really stood out, and was an obvious choice for this post.

This photo shows two Oryx/Gemsbok in the Kalahari, shown off grandly through an amazing composition and expert exposure. The photographer: Cantay Gök - you can view the photographer's website here: www.cantaygok.com
