GooglePlus Pic of the Week: 19 to 25 May 2014

Hello everyone!

Our featured photo from our +AFRICANature page on Google+ is by a travel blogger called +Susan Portnoy. You can see more of her work on her blog: http://theinsatiabletraveler.com

There are few things more iconically African than a huge Baobab tree, and to capture it in a brewing storm like this is special.

Facebook Pic of the Week: 12 to 18 May 2014

It's time to look at some stand-out photos from the AFRICANature Facebook Page from last week. There was no specific theme, which always makes for some interesting viewing due to the variety we see in those weeks.

How could we not pick this quirky shot of a Spotted Hyena youngster? The ultra-wide angle perspective makes this come alive. The photographer is Keith Connelly, a wildlife photographer and safari guide based in the Timbavati Game Reserve of South Africa. Check out more of his work: http://500px.com/Keith-Connelly

Facebook Pic of the Week: 5 to 11 May 2014

Anyone keeping their eyes on the theme last week on the AFRICANature Facebook Page couldn't help but smile at the theme we were running and the quirky images being shared by our community...

The theme was all about Lazy Lions, those kings of the bush who sleep up to 20 hours per day. And what's more, you actually had to post photos of them being lazy and useless and sleepy...anyone who's been on safari knows that the majority of your lion sightings end up being a snoozefest so we knew the submissions would come in thick and fast. Using the hashtag #LazyLions, we received some great photos, and here are our two featured photos of the week.

This lazy flat cat was photographed by Gerhard Steenkamp in the Kalahari. Look at that "rub my belly" pose! You can see more of Gerhard's work on his website: www.gerhardsteenkamp.com

Our second choice for this week goes to Mark Bridger. How uncomfortable does that bed look to you? This lioness was photographed in the Mara Triangle in Kenya last year. Residing in the UK, more of Mark's work can be seen on his website: www.bridgephotography.co.uk

You'll get your daily dose of cuteness for sure with our featured photo from the +AFRICANature page on G+ for the week of 28 April to 4 May, for sure!

+Alistair Knock shared this adorable baby Vervet Monkey with the #AFRICANature theme, and we thought it apt to share it with you here on the blog this week. Check out more of Alistair's work on his website: www.tarajiblue.com

Facebook Pic of the Week: 28 April to 4 May 2014

Our theme for the week of 28 April to 4 May was something odd for a page focusing on Africa: we were looking for photos of animals taken on OTHER continents. We called it "Out of Africa" and used the hashtag #OUTofAFRICA...

We saw many interesting animals being shown, and it was tough to choose one. This photo of a wild Ocelot from Brazil stood out, thought. A rare treat to see and photograph. The photographer is Patrick Meier from Switzerland. You can see more of his work on his website: www.mywilderness.net

Fresh from the +AFRICANature page. our Google+ pic of the week for 21 to 27 April goes to +Rudi van den Heever. It shows a lovely presentation of the annual bloom of Cosmos wildflowers on the South African countryside in Autumn.

Facebook Pic of the Week: 21 to 27 April 2014

This was a tough one! Sooo many amazing images were shared during this week (during which there was no specific theme), that making a pick of just one was pretty tough. We settled on a duo this week...two images of predators showing amazing natural behaviour, one a tender family moment and the other a dramatic struggle for life.

Our first choice is this stellar image by Ben Cranke. It was captured in the infamous Duba Plains in the Okavango Delta of Botswana, where lions and buffalo are engaged in a daily tango of life and death. You can see more of Ben's work on his website: www.bencranke.com

This photo is the copyright of Ben Cranke and unauthorised use is prohibited

The second choice for the week goes to Brendon Cremer. It shows a lovingly tender moment between a female leopard and her cub in the Khwai area of Botswana. Brendon's website can be seen here: www.brendoncremer.com

GooglePlus Pic of the Week: 14 to 20 April 2014

There were a couple of great photos shared via the +AFRICANature page on G+ during this particular week.

This photo of lion cubs on a kill by +Penny Robartes stood out to us. It was taken on the banks of the Chobe river in Botswana, and she was able to get close with the help of a photographic boat. You can see more of her work on her G+ profile as well as on her Facebook page:

Facebook Pic of the Week: 7 to 13 April 2014

With all the attention that the big iconic animals of Africa get on social media every day, we thought it apt to encourage people to post photos of the lesser-noticed species during this week. We chose the theme #AntelopeAntics for our Facebook Page.

We loved seeing all the different species of antelopes and various types of behaviour displayed. There was one photo which really stood out, and was an obvious choice for this post.

This photo shows two Oryx/Gemsbok in the Kalahari, shown off grandly through an amazing composition and expert exposure. The photographer: Cantay Gök - you can view the photographer's website here: www.cantaygok.com

It's time to reflect on the images shared with the #AFRICANature theme from the previous week. Out of all the photos shared from the +AFRICANature page on G+, this one stood out to us...

Congrats to +piper mackay for being featured with this lovely image of zebras on the African plains. You can see more of her amazing work on her website as well: www.pipermackayphotography.com

Facebook Pic of the Week: 31 March to 6 April 2014

Last week, we had an open theme again on our Facebook Page - "anything goes" actually.

There were many interesting and beautiful photos shared - as usual - but this one just captured our attention. It was taken by a very talented multi-disciplinary photographer from Durban called Kierran Allen. It shows the dust and drama of a massive river crossing building up on the banks of the Mara river during the annual Great Migration.

You can see more of Kierran's work on his website: www.kierranallen.com

GooglePlus Pic of the Week: 24 to 30 March 2014

It's been a good week for the #AFRICANature theme on G+...
The quality and frequency of photos being shared is increasing every day. Thanks to all our curators who make sure we share regularly and share high quality photography from Africa.

This week's choice goes to the current reigning BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year, +greg du toit. You can see more of his amazing photography on his website: www.gregdutoit.com

This photo shows an endangered Chimpanzee from the Mahale mountains in Tanzania, striking a very anthropomorphic pose. Remember to check out the +AFRICANature page and share your photos with us using the hashtag #AFRICANature on Facebook and Google+!

Facebook Pic of the Week: 24 to 30 March 2014

Our theme last week was called Elephantastic and we used the hashtag #Elephantastic on our Facebook Page.

The amount of totally stunning photos we received was very encouraging - we've got some talented people participating in the AFRICANature project. Unfortunately, we can't feature EVERY photo submitted, but take heart that many of the photos not featured this week might just be shared at a later stage.

Our pic of the week was especially tough, since there were so many diverse and amazing photos to choose from. Ultimately, there was one photo that really just stole the show...a sublime piece of photographic art capturing natural history and the soul of an elephant so beautifully.

Brett Greenaway is the photographer, so be sure to check out his online portfolio at 500px:
http://www.500px.com/BrettGreenaway

Brett's photo has reached 69,440 people at the time of writing this post! Thanks to everyone for sharing and promoting the work of our talented photographers.

GooglePlus Pic of the Week: 17 to 23 March 2014

It's time to share our pic of the week from our G+ page for last week.

The image that stood out to us this week is from a recognised and acclaimed wildlife and conservation photographer based in South Africa - Mr +Peter Chadwick. You can see more of his amazing work on his website: www.peterchadwick.co.za

This photo shows a Black-backed Jackal attempting to catch a Burchell's Sandgrouse at a waterhole in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (Kalahari desert) in South Africa.

We're looking forward to seeing what you share with us during this next week!

Facebook Pic of the Week: 17 to 23 March 2014

We had no specific theme for this past week on the AFRICANature Facebook Page, but this is the image that stood out the most...

Christof Schoeman shared this amazingly cute photo of an African Wild Cat kitten asleep. These felines are rarely seen in the daytime, and to see one this small is a rare treat.

GooglePlus Pic of the Week: 10 to 16 March 2014

Folks, our awesome theme is now live on Google+ as well, and you can find the official AFRICANature G+ page HERE.

Participation is coming along nicely - more or less on the same principles as on our Facebook page.

Our first pic of the week from G+ is from +Konstantinos Arvanitopoulos (you can go directly to his G+ profile through Blogger's intuitive integration with G+). His website can be accessed here: http://outtherephotos.com/

How lovely is this image of oryx/gemsbok from Namibia's Namib desert??

Facebook Pic of the Week: 10 to 16 March 2014

Alrighty then - here we go with last week's pic of the week from our Facebook Page.

There was no specific theme for this week, so all nature images posted during the week come into contention. We just love this stealthy and spooky image of a Kalahari leopard, photographed by Hendri Venter using a slow shutter panning technique.

You can see more of his amazing photography on his website: www.digitalwild.co.za
