Facebook Pic of the Week: 16 to 22 June 2014

Hello everyone! Our pick from the Facebook Page for this particular week is a rarity of note. It was an open theme - "anything goes" literally as long as it's natural and African.

This photo shows the rare Pangolin - an ant-eater with a quirky look and an ability to elude most safari fanatics for years due to its shy and nocturnal nature. Unfortunately, it's also the target of large-scale poaching as their scales are falsely believed to contain medicinal value (much like the case is with rhino horn). Just recently a shipment of more than 1 ton was confiscated, equaling a shocking amount of lost pangolins in the wild.

This week's photographer is Andy Lowe, based in Zimbabwe. You can see more of his lovely work on his website: www.andylowephotography.com

Facebook Pic of the Week: 9 to 15 June 2014

We had a special theme running on our Facebook Page during the week of 9 to 15 June 2014 - all about Africa's embattled and endangered Rhinos. #RhinoRescue was the hashtag used to create awareness of the gentle beauty of these behemoths. A Rhino is now poached every few minutes in Africa on a daily basis, and there just seems to be no end to the massacre.

Rhino poaching has reached a crisis point, and if the killing continues at this rate, we could see rhino deaths overtaking births in 2016-2018, meaning rhinos could go extinct in the very near future.

Our featured photographer is Ross Couper, who shared this poignant monochrome vision of a White Rhino calf. You can see more of his work here: www.rosscouper.com

Facebook Pic of the Week: 2 to 8 June 2014

It was another week of "anything goes", an open theme as it were, where any photo of Africa's fauna and flora and vistas was welcome.

There was one photo that clearly stood out - and it is highly probable that you will NOT see another photo showing this exact group of animals in these poses ever again. The photographer is Timothy Smith from Australia, and he captured this moment while working as a field guide in Africa. You can follow his Facebook page here: www.facebook.com/PhotographyTrs

The photo itself is posted below and shows two endangered White Rhinoceros in the act of mating, with two critically endangered African Wild Dogs looking on with seemingly bemused expressions...talk about a uniquely African moment!

GooglePlus Pic of the Week: 26 May to 1 June 2014

Our featured photographer from the +AFRICANature Google+ this week is +Chad Wright who shared this adorable photo of Ostrich chicks with us. His good use of monochrome and slow shutter speed lifts this photo above the other great photos we received of "more iconic" species and locations.

You can see more of Chad's work on his website: www.chadwrightphotography.co.za

Facebook Pic of the Week: 25 May to 1 June 2014

If you went on the AFRICANature Facebook Page last week, you would have seen that we had an awesome theme going: "Jolly Giraffes"

Members of our community posted a large variety of interesting and original giraffe photos to the theme using the hashtag #JollyGiraffes. Here are our two pics of the week (it was hard to choose one, okay)...

Our first choice goes to Anja Denker from Namibia - this photo is brilliant in its scope and execution and mood...the giraffes aren't the main attraction but at the same time they absolutely make the photo. You can check out her Facebook page HERE.

Our second choice is chosen for unique composition and thinking outside the box, as well as the soft monochrome mood. The photographer is Johan Siggesson from Malta, and you can check out his website HERE.
